How many friends can I add daily on Facebook?

What is the maximum number for friends I can have?

These are the two most common search terms which bring people to my blog.

Allan Cockerill's Facebook profileThe answer to the first question is: I don’t know, and nobody seems to know for sure, but 20 to 30 seems to be the accepted figure.

I have added more, but slowed right down because I started hearing about people having their accounts deactivated for adding friends too aggressively.

Facebook is very conscious of spam, and is committed to blocking it in whatever way they can, even at the risk of being seen as heavy handed.

People who add friends quickly could be seen to have an ulterior motive, such as building a list to sell products to at a later date.

It should always be remembered that Facebook, Myspace, Bebo, StumbleUpon, etc are Social Networking Sites, where you can network with friends and business associates, but the emphasis is on social.

Stray too far off course, and you can expect a bit of strife from the site, and maybe even have your account suspended.

I myself would recommend adding no more than 10 friends in a day, and wait until all the invitations that I have sent out have been responded to.

Personally, I would concentrate on adding people as friends that I know from elsewhere to start with.

You can start by seeing if people from your email address book are on Facebook. However, don’t do what Harry Joiner did.Jonathon Kay makes the point that Facebook seems structured to limit users to people that they already know, rather than meeting new people. The maximum number of friends that you can add on Facebook appears to be 5,000.These days I usually don’t add many people as friends on Facebook, preferring instead to let people add me.I use my Facebook profile badge on my blog site, so as to help friends from other social networks to find me.I make a point of trying to stay within the rules on Facebook. Some seem to get away with things, while others disappear as if they were never there! I value the relationships that I have on the site too much to upset the apple cart!

Lesson Learned

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

I learned a hard lesson yesterday.

Don’t have a ticklefest with a little one when you’re finishing up a blog post, especially one that’s taken a couple days to write. EVEN if you have saved it. J somehow managed to kick my mouse, deleting both the post AND the saved copy in one swell foop.

Soooo, instead, I asked Alan Cockerill, Facebook Pro, to write a guide to Facebook. Thank you so much, Allan, for coming to the rescue!
