This is really a good post! It is something that has been on my mind as a single mom, I want to make sure I am safe when I am on the net in all possible ways. I had not seen anything on the web about protecting myself while social networking though, so thanks for writing this.

Great article Teeg, as always!

What a lot of people don't realize is that their details can read like a jig saw puzzle. Something people can try for themselves to see how much info they have out there is to type their name into Google, and do a search for themselves.

Another, as you showed me once, is to type their username on various networking sites comes up - it can be really scary, especially in regard to birth dates and so on!

Cheers

Hi,
You have a very cool blog here…loved the content.
This is to all the social networkers, here is a wonderful concept of accessing SN sites on your mobile. You can access Facebook, Linkedin via mobile without internet, GPRS, EDGE or WAP. Many more other services are available like Google maps and star bucks etc... Check it out: http://modazzle.com/cms/userLogin.html?channel=CM&camp=mobilenetO259
Sign up is free...

Great info. A lot of people don't realize that when you put information on the web, it is there for everyone to see.

Allan, I didn't even think about mentioning a user name search, but you're right, it's rather frightening to know that our alias might be giving away our birthday, phone number, address, and other private information, even when we've been careful not to put our real name out into cyberspace. By the way, if your user name does connect to your phone number, all it takes is searching a reverse phone directory to find out who you are and possibly where you live. Phone books are rather frightening tools if you're concerned about your privacy and safety.

@Matt You're welcome. Glad you liked it! :)

@Beauty Glad I could help. I love social networking and want others to enjoy it too, but feel safety on here is just as important as having our children wear protective gear when they're biking or skating.

@Liza Thank you.

@music Thanks for the add! :)

@Debby Thank you. A LOT of people don't realize how important their birthdate is, unfortunately, and it's become a bad habit of most websites to request your birth day and year when you're signing up, and then that information is shared with everyone who can connect with you somehow. Scary!
