Free Rice and (uggh) Sinus Infections

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I’ve had a sinus infection since last week, which has unfortunately left me wanting to do nothing more than curl up and find some fun sites online to keep me busy and forget about trying to write anything interesting.

I had already promised myself I would write something today though, so after trying two articles and finally giving up on both, I decided I would share something that’s not only fun and addictive, but also educational, and even better…the more you play, the more you help to end world hunger!

Free Rice is a site that I learned about last week from Buzzing with Ange. When you first click on the site, you’ll see an empty bowl and a greenish box with a vocabulary word and 4 definition choices. Above both the bowl and the words is this note: “For each word you get right, we donate 10 grains of rice through the United Nations to help end world hunger.”

So what are you waiting for? Go enrich your vocabulary! :)

  • It's fun to do! Hope your sinus gets better soon :)
  • I love that site :) Half the blogs I've visited lately seem to have posted about it!

Thanks so much, Ange! It is fun...and very addictive. I somehow missed the tweet about it, so I'm really glad I caught your post. :)

Claire, I hadn't even thought about how many posts I've seen about it recently until you said that. So I went back to see if they listed their totals. On October 7, 830 grains of rice were donated. That number has steadily gone up and yesterday alone, 170,885,620 grains of rice were donated. Even better, the grand total so far is 2,628,006,040. Wow!
  • OMG, that's amazing! And lots of people said what would ten grains of rice a go do - um, lots apparently! Thanks for checking that out, I forgot you could do that! I'm still in shock about the totals, people really do like the game! I posted about it after reading about it on one of the blogs I visit, then a couple of my readers did the same, it's like a virus going around. It's well worth it, especially after reading how well people are doing!
  • WOW!! alright. Those totals are awesome! It has nearly tripled since I posted about it. I have to get over there again and donate some more :)
  • If you are fighting chronic sinus infections go find a good doctor. I had to go through 3 before I found one that listened and "fixed" me without surgery. I have not had a sinus infection in 6 months. Previously I was getting one every month.

  • This was passed on to me which I found quite useful to put it into perspective...

    7000 grains = 1 pound = 453.6 grams (1 kilogram equals 2.2 pounds = 15400 grains)

    Peace.Gary
  • This helped put things into perspective for me so I could use free rice accordingly...

    7000 grains = 1 pound = 453.6 grams (1 kilogram equals 2.2 pounds = 15400 grains)

    Peace! Gary
  • thanks Gary... now I get the perspective... cool!

@HiTech: That's a good idea, I just really don't care for most of the doctors I've found around here. I'm sure a lot of it is that I just prefer the slower pace of life (and doctors) in the south, but rapid visits leave me feeling like I'm bothering them, even when I'm there for a yearly (okay, not so yearly) check-up that they reminded me about.

@Gary: Wow! That does help. Thanks! :)
  • @Teeg I found a really good one in NorCal and this is what he had me do:

    Things I do everyday:
    Twice daily saline sinus rinse
    Twice daily astiline
    Twice daily nasalcrom

massive antibiotic dose for 4 weeks
steroids for 3 weeks (which is totally freaky)

I had a few things going on though, a deviated septum and I am allergic to just about every outdoor allergy their is.

Anyways I used to think the same thing about Drs. until I found this one. I think it is like dating, you have to go through a few bad ones to figure out what is going to work for you.
